Fire Advisory
Effective immediately, the Fire Restriction in Lethbridge County has been downgraded to a Fire Advisory recent precipitation and cooler temperatures. However, windy conditions are forecast in the weekend ahead, which may once again increase the wildfire risk.
Moving from a Restriction to an Advisory will now allow for controlled burns and fireworks with a valid permit.
Fires and devices allowed under the Fire Advisory:
(Must meet the specifications in the County’s Fire Bylaw)
- Controlled burns (e.g., yard waste, burn pits) – permit required
- Fireworks – permit required
- Recreational campfires (in approved fire pits)
- Burn barrels and incinerators with spark arrestors
- Charcoal briquette barbecues
- Gas/propane heaters, stoves, barbecues (CSA/ULC approved)
- Wood pellet grills
- Gas/propane firepits/rings (CSA/ULC approved)
Although the risk has decreased, wildfires can still start easily under dry or windy conditions. Please use caution when conducting any type of burning activity. Never leave fires unattended, ensure they are fully extinguished, and avoid burning during windy conditions. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.
We thank everyone for their cooperation while our region was under an "Extreme" fire risk. These measures are critical for protecting public safety, property, agriculture and natural areas during high-risk conditions.
The County continually monitors weather conditions and other data to determine when burning restrictions are needed. A Fire Restriction or Ban may be re-issued if conditions change.
With harvest season ongoing in our ag community, we are sharing a few prevention tips that can help reduce the risk even further during this period:
- Clean out equipment regularly to remove debris that can overheat and ignite. Leaf blowers are a helpful tool.
- Schedule breaks to allow machinery to cool. Overheated parts, like bearings are a common ignition source.
- Equip each piece of equipment with a fire extinguisher and keep a water truck nearby.
- Connect with neighbours to coordinate emergency responses and share contact info.
